Yousaf is Scotland’s new leader

On 28 March, Humza Yousaf was named as Scotland’s First Minister, after becoming the new leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) on 27 March. What happened? On 15 February, the previous First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said she was stepping down as leader of the SNP. Sturgeon was the longest serving First Minister of Scotland. The First Minister is the head of the Scottish government. The SNP leadership contest had three candidates: Yousaf, Kate Forbes and Ash Regan. Around 50,000 SNP party members voted for the candidate they wanted to lead the party. Yousaf won 52% of the votes.
