Cheesecake straight from the printer
Scientists at Columbia University in the US have created some delicious cheesecake slices – using a 3D printer. 3D printing was first tested in 1981. It is a technique that creates a solid 3D structure based on a digital design from a computer. The computer creates instructions for the printer by digitally dividing up the 3D object into horizontal sections. The printer then creates these layers in real life, one by one, on top of each other, out of materials such as plastic. As the layers build up, they form the object. To create the cheesecake slices, instead of plastic the scientists used seven food ingredients: biscuit paste, peanut butter, strawberry jam, Nutella, banana purée, cherry syrup and icing.
