London lights up to celebrate Ramadan

For the first time ever, Piccadilly Circus in London has been lit up to celebrate the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which started on 22 March. London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, switched on the display, which spells out “Happy Ramadan”, and lots of people gathered to mark the special occasion. Ramadan lasts for 30 days. During this time, many Muslims (people who follow the religion of Islam) around the world don’t eat or drink anything between sunrise and sunset. This is called fasting, and it is believed to bring people closer to Allah, or God. People also pray, read the Qur’an (the holy book of Islam) and help others.
