Oil leak affects coast in Dorset

People have been told to avoid swimming at Poole Harbour in Dorset, on the south coast of England, after there was an oil leak on 26 March. The leaked fluid, made up of 85% water and 15% oil, was being carried through a pipeline from the nearby Wytch Farm oil field. This is an area of land that has lots of oil under it, and special equipment is used to pump out the oil. The oil is used to generate electricity, or to make petrol and plastics. Wytch Farm produces 14,000 barrels of oil per day. Around 200 barrels worth (32,000 litres) of liquid from Wytch Farm accidentally leaked into Poole Harbour but the company that owns it, Perenco, said the leak was “quickly stopped and contained”.
