2019 marks 50 years since the first lunar landing.

On 20 July 1969 (21 July in the UK because of the time difference), Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon. Even 50 years later, the mission is among humanity’s greatest technological achievements, but how and why did it happen – and will we ever go back? The early days The Apollo programme came about because of the “space race” that dominated the 1950s and 1960s. At the time, there was a huge rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union (a country composed of Russia and its neighbours). Both sides used space launches to show their scientific superiority. The Soviets took an early lead, launching the first artificial satellite in 1957 and putting the first man – Yuri Gagarin – in space in 1961.…
