Fighting the fear

Some phobias are more unusual than others.

What gets you scared? Meeting a giant snake? Finding a tiger in the toilet? It makes perfect sense to be frightened of all these things – the fear keeps you safe. However, some people become very frightened even when there is no real danger. These fears are called phobias, and many types exist. The most common is arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Less common are anatidaephobia, the fear of being constantly watched by a duck, and sidonglobophobia, the fear of cottonwool balls. These may sound silly, but a phobia sufferer’s feelings are very real. Fortunately, doctors are usually able to help patients to overcome their fears.
