Clouds are made up of water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the Earth’s atmosphere (the layer of gases that envelops our planet). Water is around us all the time, but in droplets that are too small to see because they have become a gas called water vapour. Clouds form when damp air gets chilly enough to turn the vapour back into visible water drops or ice crystals. Clouds are categorised based on their altitude (how far they are away from the ground) and their shape. Each category is given a name based on a Latin word, such as nimbus, which are clouds that bring rain, and stratus, which describe clouds that appear as layers.
