Mia Love was unique in Congress. The daughter of East-Coast Haitian immigrants, she moved to lily-white Utah, where in 2014 she become the nation’s first Black GOP congresswoman. A reliable conservative, she opposed the 2016 election of Donald Trump, who in his first year ended protections for Haitian refugees and in his second called Haiti a “shithole country.” At one Republican caucus meeting, Love challenged a fellow member who echoed Trump’s disparaging views. “If you don’t see me as an equal, you can remove me from this conference,” she said. “If we don’t see everyone as equal under God, we have bigger problems.”
