Bankruptcy: 23andMe’s genetic legacy

Genetic-testing pioneer 23andMe is headed for Chapter 11, said Rolfe Winkler and Kimberley Kao in The Wall Street Journal. The once-revolutionary company, valued at more than $6 billion in 2021, filed for bankruptcy protection this week, and co-founder Anne Wojcicki stepped down as chief executive. “More than 15 million people have used the service,” which is as simple as spitting into test tubes and shipping them to the company to have it analyze customers’ ancestry. But a data breach in 2023 damaged consumer trust. And 23andMe also “never solved its central business problem: Customers only need to take its DNA test once.” Its website crashed as people scrambled to delete their personal data, fearful of what might happen to it if the company gets sold.
