Medicaid is “a middle-class benefit,” said Ron Lieber. Yes, most of the program’s 70 million beneficiaries are on low incomes. But now that Medicaid is “potentially on the chopping block,” as Republicans in Congress look to make up to $2 trillion in spending cuts, it’s a good time to consider the millions of financially comfortable Americans who rely on or might one day use the program. Ask around your circle and you’ll likely find plenty of them. It might pay for nursing-home care for an elderly parent whose “nest egg has been drained after 20 years of retirement”—easy to do when the average cost of a semiprivate room in a nursing home runs to $111,325 a year. Or it might provide health insurance for adult children…
