Mandan, N.D. Spillover damages: Greenpeace must pay a pipeline company more than $667 million after a North Dakota jury found the nonprofit liable for defamation and other claims. The Dallas-based Energy Transfer alleged that Greenpeace orchestrated “violent and destructive protests” in 2016 and 2017 against its Dakota Access Pipeline near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation; Greenpeace maintains it played a minimal role during the protests, which were led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The organization has said the damages could bankrupt its U.S. operation, and it plans to appeal the verdict. Energy Transfer’s case hinged on what it called a “vast, malicious publicity campaign” against the company.
