Jake (Barnes) and I entered the rodeo in Salinas (California) this summer, and watching the cowboys who are out there roping right now wowed me and took me back. Handling steers is critical to a team’s success, and it’s not the sole responsibility of the header. If a heeler helps a header out, it’ll pay off when it’s time to throw his rope. You need to communicate with your partner. If a steer goes hard to the right, your heeler needs to haze him. If a steer goes hard to the left, your heeler needs to back off. Point 1. Handling cattle is an art. A big part of your success in handling a steer is predetermined by three things: The kind of horse you’re riding, the steer you’ve drawn and the pattern your heeler makes the steer run. Time with a solid horse trainer is one of the best investments you can make in this business. Everyone wants to talk about how high horse prices have gone, but what I don’t hear is people talking about the price of horse training going up. Training costs have stayed close to the same, while the opportunity for those types of young head horses and young heel horses has gone up tenfold. What does that mean? It means buying a well-bred 2-year-old didn’t make sense seven or eight years ago, but it might make sense today. As an amateur roper, you’ll be money-up on a horse by paying a trainer to make him solid. If you start with a handy-broke 3-year-old for $12,000, I believe you should see an amazing transformation. Coleman Proctor considers every run on his palomino ace, Admiral, a gift. After a year on the injured reserve, he got six glorious weeks out of Lena Spark Dunit earlier this year.
