When I first moved to Dorset with my young family almost 20 years ago, we rented a cranky old cottage on a farm estate in the middle of nowhere. As homesick as I was for my past city life, we arrived with autumn, and I’m not sure there was a more seductive time to embrace the countryside. While the summer holiday crowd wound up their crab lines for another year and hit the motorway with shells in their pockets, we were staying put. Lured by mellow light filtering through golden beech trees, plump pheasants skittering down the lanes, cinnamon dusted pies using the windfall apples in the farm orchard and hazy September beach sunrises, we looked at our new home through wide eyes.
