HORNS OF PLENTY Preventing unnecessary rhino deaths thanks to tagging technology “Every 20 hours in South Africa a rhino dies for its horn,” says Professor James Larkin. But thanks to the efforts of him and his team at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, that may be about to change for the better. Over the last three years, the scientists have been developing something called the Rhisotope Project. Using nuclear technology in the form of small quantities of radioisotopes, they’ve ‘tagged’ the horns of 20 rhinos living in the UNESCO Waterbury Biosphere Reserve in such a way that they’ll be picked up by radiation monitors at international borders, all without harming the rhinos themselves. If poachers are unable to smuggle rhino horn without being detected, it renders the horn valueless. The hope…
