‘Leave no trace’ is probably the first thing we’re told when exploring the countryside. While that’s a useful anti-litter strategy, it’s also misleading. There’s no part of our countryside without the trace of humans in it - no pristine wilderness untouched by human hands or feet over the centuries exists, not least that it’s already been carved up into ownership, determining what parts we can legally access (in England, that’s just 8% of land, and 3% of rivers).
