Leaving the cairn behind me, I pass foragers squirrelling bilberries into Tupperware and head south on a flagstone path, delighted to have captured a photo of a portly red grouse sunning itself on a stone before flying away with a loud gobble that sets several others bursting from the heather. Soon it'll be time for this hardy ‘ling' to bloom a vivid pink-purple, a spectacle that will be familiar to anyone who lives near a similar acidic, moorland geology. The majestic outline of Dovestone Tor emerges shadowy on the horizon. On my left, the vast expanse of Blackhole Moor is soggy with sphagnum moss and wobbling under a heat shimmer, which seems to twitch the bog cotton.
