As soon as Mum got her metal egg slicer out, I knew: it was going to be a Picky Tea. My homework was immediately forgotten. I could even be dragged away from the latest goings on down Ramsay Street. Picky Teas were the ultimate dinner treat, a night where rhyme and reason (and quite often nutrition) were replaced with whatever delights my mum laid out on the table. Alongside the identically-proportioned slices of hard boiled egg, a pork pie appeared out of nowhere, cheese was arranged on a plate (stilton for my dad, an industrial-sized block of cheddar for the rest of us), with some crackers that had been forgotten about after Christmas.
