This summer, my favourite gardening trousers finally gave up the ghost. They were an old pair of cords that were so well worn they had plenty of give whenever I needed to bend or stretch. I loved their generous pockets and boot-legged shape, which allowed them to slip over my wellies. But, although I was sad to see them go, it gave me a chance to rethink what to wear in the garden and to actually buy something new. This might seem extravagant when old garments and more inexpensive, generic outdoor wear (fleeces and waterproof trousers) are perfectly suitable.
