There are times when employing delay tactics in the garden is actually advisable. Take, for example, tidying the garden. Traditionally, this is the month to cut back straggly foliage, remove spent flowers and rake up leaves. However, I would make a case for allowing the garden to gently dwindle and fade at its own pace. You can’t lose: wildlife loves a bit of mess in the form of leaf piles and seedheads and you’ll have time to make the most of the September sunshine (hopefully) by sowing a few tasty crops that will see you through the next few months.
