You don’t need a great deal of expertise or equipment to save seeds and grow new plants for free. “Saving seeds can be as simple as popping them in a bag,” says Neil Munro of Garden Organic. “Indeed, all you need is a paper bag, a dry day and somewhere to store your seeds.” Neil manages the Heritage Seed Library at Garden Organic, which was set up to save the nation’s heritage seeds. Neil’s team works hard to preserve seeds that are no longer produced by the commercial seed industry. Local varieties such as ‘Bath Cos’ lettuce or ‘Shetland’ kale are under threat.
