A small silver locket – shaped like a book and etched with beautiful, swirling patterns – is one of my favourite things. Given to me as a baby, I wore it to childhood birthday parties, as a gangly teenager and it remains the prized centrepiece of my jewellery collection. But it is more than a pretty lump of metal. The necklace makes me feel happy, comforted that the newborn me was thought worthy of something so precious. Fancifully, I also imagine it to be a magical hint that I would go on to write for a living. Most of us cherish a handful of things that hold particularly potent meaning.
