CANALS ARE EASY TO OVERLOOK AS THEY GLIDE PAST CITY STREETS OR RURAL FIELDS, BUT AS A BREATHING SPACE THEY ARE HARD TO BEAT, SAYS FLOATING NOMAD, DANIE COUCHMAN

By the canal, the trees look greener than they ought to be, as if someone’s turned up the colour saturation. Narrowboats in all their hues sit motionless on the water, their mirror image reflected beneath in the glassy stillness. Just now, at the end of summer, everything turns golden and any worries are washed away just by being here. Waterside meadows bloom with wildflowers. Canada geese slice through swirly clouds in the burnt orange and pink sky at dusk, and the water is framed by arches of willow. Blackberries grow in abundance along the towpaths, dragonflies skit across water lilies, and the watery network of nearby reservoirs and backwaters quietly glistens.
