A 60-SECOND INSIGHT INTO A NEW PERSONAL CHALLENGE

SOMETIMES A BIRTHDAY PRESENT is the thing that kickstarts a new hobby and so it was when I hinted at (OK, asked for) a beginner’s pottery session, after being inspired by the The Great Pottery Throw Down. My three-hour course included both hand-throwing and time on the wheel but I was a bit, well, thrown when, after a quick demo that made it look oh-so easy, I was ushered straight on to a wheel. It wasn’t oh-so easy at all. The idea was to make a basic pot. Mine was more dish-like as straight sides turned out to be tricky. Coordination is the most important skill, as there’s a lot to remember at once – pushing down on the clay, adding lots of water and keeping the wheel going at a sensible…
