“The apron provides somewhere to wipe your hands that isn’t your jeans”
For various reasons, the apron fell out of favour in the 1960s. In all probability, this was because of its associations with the 1950s, a decade of domestic drudgery. It had no place in the liberated woman’s wardrobe. It was the garment worn by Nanette Newman in The Stepford Wives* when she turned up on her new neighbour’s doorstep with a pot roast, or the archetypal housewife pictured in the kitchen smiling brightly as she lovingly rustled up hubbie’s supper, right.
Both of which are entirely justifiable reasons to consign the apron to fashion history, but also a shame: it is a supremely useful item of clothing. It not only protects clothes from spillages and stains but it provides somewhere…
