CURRENT EVENTS Against the odds, marine life continues amongst ocean debris The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is probably better known as one of the great ocean ‘garbage patches’, filled with plastics that have accumulated on the converging ocean currents. But researchers from Georgetown University – taking advantage of an 80-day longdistance swim by Benoît Lecomte through the NPSG in 2019 – collected samples from the water to understand what sea creatures may be living there. The research team, led by marine biologist Dr Rebecca Helm, found large concentrations of sea rafts, blue sea buttons and violet sea snails, living in the patch.
