Just like Anne in L.M Montgomery's Anne Of Green Gables, I am glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It's a dreamy month of woodsmoke, golden light, burnished trees and clove-scented apple crumble. The sea holds on to the last of the summer warmth, so I swim as often as I can. It feels like we are suspended in amber for a few precious weeks before the slippery descent to Christmas begins. I just wish this month was twice as long. Maybe we could do a deal with February? October is prime foraging season, too. Blackberries are in their final juicy flourish, and there are sloes, elderberries, rosehips, mushrooms, hawthorn berries and chestnuts.
