Some people can see the season shift by observing what the birds are up to. After years of living in a big city, I’m attuned to more urban kinds of signalling. There’s a point, just about now, when I particularly notice the year’s turning. It’s like theatre - oneby-one, the lights on streets, shops and homes flicker on, transforming our once familiar surroundings. It’s in these first few weeks of October - before the clocks go back - when dusk hovers around 6pm, that the streets become prime time for window watchers like me.
