Conservationist, campaigner and author Mary Colwell believes that respect for the natural world is rooted in experience, whether in the Serengeti or the garden; we just need to keep curiosity alive

As a young radio producer on a backpacking trip in South America, Mary Colwell had an encounter with an extraordinary bird that shaped the way she felt about the Earth and her place in it. It began on a wild camping trip in Patagonia, when a chance meeting led to the offer of a trip on a frigate sailing to Antarctica. Going out onto deck one bitterly cold afternoon, she remembers, “hanging over the back of the boat was a wandering albatross. It was so enormous, so astonishing, I couldn’t speak. I just stared at this giant of a bird, hanging there like a mobile, this huge head and great big bill and two-metre wingspan. It was so close.
