Ten years is no small achievement for a magazine to be part of people's lives, especially an indie one like The Simple Things. So, we hope you'll allow us a moment to reflect a little. There's always debate about our 'best' covers; I've selected 10 here from the last decade* that captured something special or stood for something important. GATHERING is the first cover we made as Iceberg Press and it was cook and photographer Catherine Frawley's first one for us, too. So, it's fitting that she made our 10th Birthday Cake (p22). We'd all have a garden room in an ideal world, where we could gather as the nights turn chillier or for when the weather is a bit iffy. Pop on your favourite jumper, add a blanket or cosy scarf and all you really need in early autumn is a bit of shelter step forward the greenhouse. The wood’s quiet calm is shattered by a raucous rasping, ringing from the crowns of the tallest trees. It slices the afternoon’s stillness and makes me jump. I stand, rooted, listening to this bickering from beyond the branches: chastising cries, harsh shrieks, and scratching sounds like the white noise of a radio stuck between stations. Scanning the oaks for the cause of the commotion I spot a single bird. Its stark white rump signalling as it dashes across the clearing with a fluttering, yet purposeful flight. All that uproar from one bird, no bigger than a magpie. This is often the way with Eurasian jays – sound before sight. BLACKBERRY AND WHITE CHOCOLATE BIRTHDAY CAKE Serves 8-10 250g butter, at room temperature (plus extra for greasing) 250g caster sugar 4 eggs 250g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 50g white chocolate chunks Zest of 1 lemon 100g blackberries FOR THE FILLING AND TOPPING: 50g blackberries Blackberry jam 250g mascarpone Zest of ½ lemon 1 Pour a glass of fizz to start the celebrations and preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas 4. Turn any extras into a wreath to welcome autumn and ward off spiders. Take a wire coat hanger and straighten it out, or a length of ordinary stiff garden wire. What do you see when you cast your eyes over your bookcase? Some old favourites, no doubt, or some still waiting to be read. Annette Dauphin Simon suggests a new way of looking at your shelves: spine poetry. It’s a game she and her colleagues devised working in a Florida bookshop one day. In a packed shop, with a busy mix of all kinds of books, they began reading the titles in “their random arrangements.” She became hooked, devising and recording these ‘found verses’, now brought together in her book Spine Poems. Sometimes the results are funny, sometimes incredibly poignant, but - as this selection shows - they always make you think, just like ‘real’ poetry does. My childhood was spent on the cusp of the countryside, where the suburbs met the sweeping fields. When the wind blew our way, the gentle lowing of cattle soundtracked the usual small-town pursuits - lawnmowing, seed-sowing, leaf-blowing - and at the end of our cul-de-sac, I could choose my own adventure. Turn right, and I’d be heading for the shopping centre, beloved Boots lipbalm in pocket; turn left, and the streets soon made way for the wide open. As a young radio producer on a backpacking trip in South America, Mary Colwell had an encounter with an extraordinary bird that shaped the way she felt about the Earth and her place in it. It began on a wild camping trip in Patagonia, when a chance meeting led to the offer of a trip on a frigate sailing to Antarctica. Working from home

Many of us sit at our desks with our weight in the back of the pelvis and a rounded back. This makes it quite difficult to move in other directions. If we reach across for something or turn to talk to somebody, we put a lot of unnecessary strain on the back. At some point the body isn't going to tolerate it anymore and we end up with pain. A better way to sit is to have your weight more towards the front of the pelvis. This will mean there is a deeper fold at the hips, the tailbone has no weight in it and the lower back is no longer in a rounded position. Three years in the making, this replica of American prairieland, has been created by RHS horticulturalists. List great inventions and what comes to mind? The telephone, penicillin, the internet, possibly? These innovations have undoubtedly altered history, shaping lives throughout the world. But with inventions that have impacted most significantly on women’s lives - rather than universally - it’s notable how many are also by women - often stepping into gaps hitherto overlooked. Many such inventions transformed domestic spaces and responsibilities. For example, Derbyshire-born Valerie Hunter Gordon invented the disposable nappy in 1947 to cut out the “awful labour” of washing nappies. Buying a house when you live on the other side of the world is not for the faint hearted, but Christen Pears and Chris Blake had a clear idea of what they wanted in the UK when they were ready to make the big move here from western Australia. LAVENDER AND ROSE BATH BOMBS Smell sweet, soothe your skin and a simple thing to make You will need: 290g bicarbonate of soda 110g citric acid 26 drops lavender essential oil 13 drops rose-geranium essential oil 25g oats Witch hazel (in a spray bottle) Dried lavender Dried rose petals Bath bomb moulds - we used 7cm diameter plastic moulds to make one large bomb with spare mix. 5cm moulds should make two bombs. 1 Sieve the bicarbonate of soda and citric acid into a bowl. Add the essential oils and mix with your hands. Add the oats and mix again. 2 Spray the mix 10 times with the witch hazel and stir. Spray 5 more times and stir again. Flipping through cookbooks is one of my favourite ways to relax, but turning the yellowing pages of my husband’s great aunt Mabs’s* recipe book is total escapism. We inherited it when she died almost 20 years ago, a faded turquoise diary from 1976 carefully filled with handwritten recipes and magazine snippings. I met her a handful of times and knew she was a secret favourite of my husband, a straight-talking spinster, and just slightly posh, with a famous tea trolley that would be heaving with baked goods when you popped in for a quick cuppa. I’d hoped to find in it some of the recipes I remembered and wasn’t disappointed, but there’s so much more to it – it’s a story of friendships and local histories, as well as being a gastronomic…

One of my favourite authors is Jane Austen, and my mum (a retired English teacher) loves her, too. Which meant when I suggested we visit Austen’s former home (above), now a museum, Mum needed little persuasion. It’s in Chawton, Hampshire, so we’d make a weekend of it, discovering a part of the country I didn’t know, as well as finding out more about the life and times of a writer that we both love. It was also a great excuse for a mother-daughter trip, a chance to spend time with my mum, doing something we both enjoy, after a tough couple of years.
