It doesn’t take much to scare me at this time of year. The long sunny evenings of summer have been snuffed out by the change of the clocks and suddenly it’s dark on the commute home. The brooding skies and drizzle of autumn make for a melancholy mood, heightened by the piles of dead and dying leaves; fallen, decaying fruit underfoot and the enormous, invisible spiders’ webs strung like booby-traps between the shrubs in the garden. Every crunch of gravel outside my window is a potential intruder; every creak on the stairs an omen of impending doom. An errant firework and I’m hyperventilating under the table. And that’s before we even get onto the possibility of ghosts and ghouls.
