IT MAY INVOLVE A GREAT DEAL of mess, masses of calorie-laden ingredients and a certain amount of application, but baking is always worth it. Not only does it provide a ‘tah-dah!’ moment as a cake is pulled out of the oven, it fills the house with heady aromas and transforms mundane ingredients into something delicious that absolutely must be shared. We’ve always been a nation of bakers (indeed, many of us learnt at the kitchen table, licking fingers sticky from the mixing bowl), but it has taken The Great British Bake Off to turn us all into experts. Once the preserve of WI members and grandmothers, baking is now embraced by men and women of all ages and skills, who are no longer fazed by choux pastry, mirror glaze and fondant…
