When Susan Cropper first saw the flat that would become her home in West Hampstead, London, it reminded her of the New York apartment she had grown up in. One of several flats in a 1920s mansion block, it had high ceilings, original cornices and wide, generous windows that filled the space with light. “Four people had been sharing it, so there was a lot of stuff everywhere, but by the time we had ripped out all the old carpets and replaced them with wide, lime-washed oak floorboards, it looked fabulous.”
