Map in hand, I turn the corner of a quiet residential street in north London. I’m on the lookout for a particular building. But I’m not visiting someone, I’m hunting for 1930s Modernist houses and am armed with a guide to Hampstead’s finest examples. Although I’ve lived in London for more than a decade, I’ve never walked down this street before, never would have realised what was down here. And there – just beyond the point at which I might have given up – is what I’m looking for, all straight white lines, red pillars and a curved yellow front door, an architectural world away from its neighbours. I stand in admiration for a while, and then the map is out again, as I walk on to the next secret…
