SEEING THE BIG PICTURE 120 years of the fine art of saving masterworks for the nation Back in 1903, and worried about funding for the arts, a group of artists and patrons joined together to form The National Art Collections Fund. Some 308 members attended its inaugural meeting and pooled together £700 in funds. Now, what’s known as the Art Fund is celebrating 120 years of its work. The fact that we’re able to view some of the most exceptional works of art ever made here in the UK is often thanks to the Art Fund’s contributions. One of the first pieces the fund purchased, after a public campaign in 1906, was Velázquez’s The Rokeby Venus, now available to see for free in The National Gallery.
