I am a complete sucker for a tradition. But once the embers have died down on Bonfire Night there’s a bit of a lull until the excitement of Advent. I’m not one of those people who put the tree up in November (although there is certainly no judgement towards those who do). For me, autumn should be allowed to be its gloriously fruitful and mellow self until Stir-up Sunday, which arrives on the last weekend of this month. Like many festive customs, Stir-up Sunday originates from both the church and the Victorian monarchy. The name is thought to come from a line in a prayer that is said on the last Sunday before Advent, and coincides with the day the Christmas pudding would be made before maturing for several weeks.
