Pearly queens
A conservation project aiming to restore native oysters to the River Thames is under way. The river’s oyster population has seen a 95% decline in the last 200 years, due to overfishing and habitat loss. However, the new ‘mother oyster’ sanctuary, established in an Essex estuary, is hoping to reverse the decline. Adult female oysters were introduced during the summer and have since spawned.
Plastic-free Paros
The Greek island of Paros will become entirely free from plastic waste within three years. At least, that’s the hope of the Clean Blue Paros project, which is being run by UK-based NGO Common Seas. The project, which organisers say is a first of its kind, will include eradicating some types of plastic, overhauling the waste management systems, educating residents and changing legislation.
