Nearly everyone who has ever travelled by car, as a passenger or as a motorist, will have some memory of an idyllic drive. Mine remains one from Harrogate across the North York Moors to the east coast and Robin Hood Bay and Whitby on the cusp of autumn over a decade ago.
As I recall, the sky that day was clear and almost sapphire blue. It was all the more memorable for its contrast to the red paint scheme of the Ford Escort we were journeying in. This vehicle might generously have come to be described as a vintage 1980s model today.
But back then it was just an old rust bucket with too many miles on the clock and sadly only a few months away from fatally failing its MOT.
