We’re not afraid of getting out there in the autumn air. In fact we’re rather fond of a bracing windswept walk, complete with ruddy cheeks and muddy boots. A few rays of late-season sunshine and a pile of russet and gold leaves to kick through are just a bonus. The important thing is what’s waiting for you when you get back in the fading light. A neatly laid fire, waiting to be lit, and an old-fashioned spread of teatime favourites, such as deeply smoky tea bread, sticky buns, a classic coffee and walnut cake, homemade crumpets and silken, molten slices of rarebit… Only a yomp in the great outdoors could make this lot taste any better.
