An iceberg on the move helps bring life to isolated parts of the Southern Ocean The world's oldest and largest iceberg is on the move. This isn't as bad as it may initially seem, as floating icebergs are actually vital to ocean ecosystems. This one – unromantically named A23a – is a 1,500 square mile piece of ice that has been slowly moving away from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in Antarctica since 1986. It has been trapped, immobile, in an ocean vortex, but scientists on the RRS Sir David Attenborough celebrated when they noticed that the one trillion tonne iceberg had come free and is moving through the Southern Ocean once more.
