I've always wanted to live somewhere with a boot room, where I can direct visitors to a welly pile that'll produce a pair that fits and make a muddy walk possible for the unprepared. While I don't yet possess one, underneath the coat pegs by our back door sit five neat pairs of wellies. Over the past 15 years or so, some have morphed from cute, shiny toddler boots through successive pairs of kids’ Hunters (passed from eldest to youngest) to muted, sensible wellingtons that, crucially, do the job. We live in the countryside and for that you need proper wellies. Wellies that can handle daily winter use, can ford gushing streams without leakage or wade through the gloopiest of mud.
