DULL AS DISHWATER Commonly confused phrases and linguistic muddles Dishwater is pretty dull, isn’t it? You stare into it, wondering whether you could have gotten away with putting the frying pan in the dishwasher, or if it really would have ruined the non-stick surface, as they always warn you... If you think that’s dull, try staring into a ditch. It’s probably not big enough to contain something as interesting as a shopping trolley, and it hasn’t even had an injection of washing-up liquid to hide its dark-souled dankness with light-hearted bubbles. We can agree that both are dull, but back in the mists of time someone decided that one was duller than the other. So, throw out the dishwater and use the right phrase, which is ‘dull as ditchwater’.
