BEE THE CHANGE Get involved in citizen science Of all the buzzing creatures of spring and summer, bumblebees are perhaps the ones that inspire most fondness. For ten years the Bumblebee Conservation Trust has invited people to collect data on the numbers and types of bumblebees that they spot in any one place as a way of tracking the abundance and spread of the population. The 11th annual BeeWalk starts this March, inviting people to walk the same fixed route once a month until October, counting the number of bees as they go. Citizen science like this might seem like a walk in the park, but for ecologists it's vital to ensuring the ongoing survival of these fuzzy insects for plenty more summers to come.
