Gardener, cook and writer Sarah Raven believes plants should earn their place in the garden, and her recommendations for cut flowers not only built her business but also changed what many of us grow

Do you have dahlias in your garden? That's probably down to Sarah Raven. It's a flower championed in her books on cutting gardens - she's written two of those, as well as books on growing veg, cooking and wildflowers - and she's imported many varieties herself, starting with Rip City, a deep chocolate-crimson dahlia, which she saw in France in Monet's Giverny garden in the 1990s and brought back to the UK. There's even a dahlia named after her. These perennials have everything she looks for in a plant: easy to care for, flower for months and the more blooms you cut for the vase, the more they grow.
