There may be a nip in the air, but the arrival of sunny daffodils and patches of green gradually covering more ground makes it a joyful time to head off on a woodland walk. Though the sun may be shining, you'll need to wrap up and pack plenty of snacks and warming drinks to keep energy levels up for a day's exploring. The trick to making this early picnic easy and enjoyable is to do as much as you can indoors, which means less standing around when you are outside. Slice the bread, cut and wrap a cake into squares and decant the trail mix into bags before you leave. With the exception of the jacket potatoes and drinks, everything can be made the day before.
