Kirsty trudged through the wood. It was a cold spring morning and the frost still silvered the uppermost branches of the trees. She’d had a hectic few months, with her dad being ill, and her boss being difficult about the time she’d had to take off work. Having come for a walk to clear her head, she only felt more fed up with every step.
Lost in thought, she didn’t notice the dog until the last moment. “Oh!” she gulped. It was a young Golden Retriever, long-legged and bouncy, charging up with a tennis ball in its mouth.
“Hello,” Kirsty said, glancing around. “Where did you come from?” There was nobody in sight, just the sound of the wind in the trees. The dog dropped the ball at her feet, tail wagging…
