If Beatrix had been born today it’s likely she would have been a botanist, specialising in fungi. However, when in 1896 she presented 250 detailed scientific illustrations of fungi to the leading botanists and director of Kew, she felt that her work was overlooked because of her sex and age, furiously writing of Kew’s director in her journal; ‘I fancy he may be something of a misogynist.’ A year later she was more successful when her academic paper on fungi was presented to The Linnean Society. This time, her work was discussed and well received (despite women being barred from the Linnean research library and her being unable to present her work in person due to her sex), although it was never put forward for publication.…
