Traditionally in Buddhism, women cannot achieve enlightenment unless they are reincarnated as a man. But the nuns of the Drukpa lineage, in the Himalayas, beg to differ. In 2010, their founder The Gyalwang Drukpa introduced the women of the order to Kung Fu, training them in the martial art. Ever since, the nuns of Druk Amitabha Mountain Nunnery have gained a reputation around the world, both for their strength and their selflessness. Twenty years ago, there were only 30 members of the nunnery. As their skills became known, that number grew to 800, and now there’s a waiting list to join.
