Walk with a map Every walk is an opportunity to grow our brain and the easiest and simplest way to do this is to walk with a paper map. Neuroscience suggests that the part of our brain used for navigation – the hippocampus – grows as we use it and withers when we don’t. Studies of London black-cab drivers famously found them in possession of impressively large posterior hippocampi, thanks to the navigational demands of learning the whereabouts of every London street. Researchers now speculate that the region of our brain responsible for spatial navigation also plays a part in more conceptual types of navigation, like prediction, imagination and creativity, where we use our mind’s eye to help make decisions.
