We had two buddleias, or butterfly bushes, in our garden and, from June to September, they would be alive with a variety of species, from Peacock to Common Blue, Small Tortoiseshell to Meadow Brown. Forty years on and I’m sad to see that my son isn’t enjoying the same experience. Many butterfly species are steadily declining and it’s the same story with bees and many other pollinating insects. Either as a result of disease, which has wiped out the bee population, loss of habitats, which are vital for pollinators to make their nest, or the widespread use of pesticides, many of these creatures are struggling to thrive.…
