When I was a small child, I remember my father painting a picture of our cottage with the little apple tree in the garden. I recall it vividly, because it was so lifelike and very beautiful. My mother encouraged him to paint more, which he did, and though it wasn't his profession, his work became well known and sought after in the locality.
My father had many talents. He built himself an easel and bought a mitre block to make his frames. Eventually, he created a studio in the attic where the north light was good. Squeezing dabs of cobalt blue, burnt orange, sun yellow and all manner of colour through lead paint tubes, he honed his artistic style, varying his work with inks or charcoals, pastels and acrylics – though…
